the loyal captain

A new kitchen and landscape addition to an historic house and property with the intention of stitching existing house and site together into an integrated whole. The addition acts as a literal and figurative ‘bridge’ between the existing house and an expansive landscape beyond that previously felt closed off and separate. Originally built in 1933 by ship captain Ole E. Nelson as a copy of his boyhood home in Bergen, Norway, the existing house was built with a high level of care and craft, reflecting unique Scandinavian building traditions and has been maintained in excellent condition over the years.

The light touch of the addition aims to add something new to the history of this home, becoming a distinctive feature of its time, while respecting and matching the quality and attention to detail of the original. Careful consideration was placed on materials that will age and patina over time, improving with age and use, and telling their own story.
